Every class at Bay Haven School of Basics Plus in Sarasota, FL has its own EarthBox garden. From Kindergarten through 5th grade, students assemble their EarthBoxes, plant and care for organic seedlings, harvest produce, and enjoy the vegetables at a salad party. During the growing process, the children discuss key "food justice" facts about water conservation, health benefits of fresh produce, and growing without pesticides.
Plant sketches and classroom "name tags" are laminated on the EarthBoxes, to identify what is being grown and by whom. The planted EarthBoxes are placed in public areas of the school, for high visibility to students, teachers, and guests.
The Bay Haven Garden Project was founded 6 years ago by parent volunteers
who blazed the trail with a teacher liaison, Rolf Hanson. Mr. Hanson, the
Science Laboratory teacher, became coordinator in 2009, and helped integrate
this project into the school curriculum. Donations from the Sarasota County
Extension Coordinator, a local farmer, and parents have made this possible.
"Six years into the project we're still amazed that students linger once
they put their hands in the dirt," notes Mr. Hanson. "They enjoy luxuriating in the smell of the basil, as much as they love to recoil from the reek of the organic
fertilizer! Even the toughest kid wants to cradle a baby plant or harvest and wash a head of lettuce, and the most finicky kids will gobble up salad.
"We've found that the senses of touch, smell, sight and taste are the hooks that bring students into conversations about the food they put into their bodies. The love of a garden opens the way for dialogue about the world around us."

If you've got an EarthBox garden you'd like to start earlier in the year or continue growing well past the end of the fall, we've got the perfect solution: our line of sturdy, attractive Snap & Grow greenhouses, which can easily house up to 10 EarthBoxes. They're easy to install: the doors and windows come preassembled, and you just slide and lock the SnapGlas panels into place.
Our greenhouses come in two sizes, 6 by 8 feet and 8 by 12 feet, and both are available in silver and green. They're all great for extending the season for vegetables, flowers, and herbs, simply by raising the interior temperature by as much as 10-15 degrees during cooler weather. In milder climates, that may be enough to grow some plants year-round!

Easy Gardens for the Young and Seasoned
The EarthBox gardening system is ideal for anyone who wants to grow plants. It's self-contained, rises above the needs for space and in-ground soil, solves watering quandaries, and accommodates both the young and young at heart. Grandparents and their grandchildren can easily grow together! There's no bending necessary, and no experience required.
The EarthBox Junior is especially appealing to those who want to try out gardening. It's suitable for growing herbs, as well as for window box, deck, balcony and patio gardening. Not only is the size manageable, but so is the price.
Another gift idea for new gardeners, those who can't bend and dig, and even seasoned growers is the EarthBox mini or "vertical" garden. Vertical gardens are very popular these days. They're perfect gifts for those who have limited space, time, or mobility, but want to grow fresh produce indoors or out. Our mini-gardens are reasonably priced, and look great in the kitchen.
Or you could give someone a cold frame, which is ideal for seed-starting and provides plant protection when planting early, or from late-season cold.
Want to really dazzle a loved one? How about a
Snap & Grow greenhouse? They're great for the gardener wanting an early start on growing plants; you can start up to 10 EarthBoxes inside. These greenhouses really are a "snap" to install, given their preassembled door and windows, and SnapGlas panels that slide and lock into place.
If your loved one is already an EarthBox grower, a Replant Kit should delight them. We also offer a wide variety of other accessories for every need. If birds have been feasting on someone's tomatoes, get them some bird netting. EarthBox Garden Stands are ideal for those who can't easily bend, while staking kits and trellises will help keep vining plants and their fruit aloft. If you know someone who'd like to dress up their EarthBoxes, give them some of our veneers.
Sometimes you just need a small item for a grab bag, business gesture, or stocking stuffer. Gardeners may appreciate practical accessories like labels, a soil analyzer, even a twine dispenser.
Tomato lovers will be especially appreciative of the numerous varieties of tomato seeds we offer.
Food preservation products such as pickling kits, tomato sauce packets, and home canning guides are also great for anyone who grows an abundance of produce and wants to preserve some for later enjoyment.
If you're not sure what someone on your gardening gift list might like, you can always give them a gift certificate and let them make their own choice. EarthBox gift certificates come in denominations of $20, $25, $50, and $100, and can be applied to the cost of products, shipping, and/or taxes if applicable. They're good for 12 full months after the date of issue.
We've Got It All
If you've got a grower or interested beginner on your shopping list, then you've definitely come to the right place to shop. We've got items appropriate for every gardener, especially those with limited space and time. There's plenty more where all of the above came from, so come check us out!

This month we salute Stringer Nursery and Garden Center, serving Tulsa, Oklahoma since 1957.
Stringer's Manager, Stan Bunnell, is very responsive to his customers' requests. In fact, four years ago, Stringer began selling EarthBoxes because so many customers had asked for them. They've been selling well ever since.
The organic and regular EarthBox Kits are featured in the Indoor Garden Center, where they're easily seen by customers. Sales are most robust in springtime, but they sell other times of the year as well, whenever the weather is conducive to growing.
"Customers are particularly satisfied with the EarthBox system here in Tulsa, because they don't have to contend with the clay-intense soil," says Stan. "They can control the soil conditions and grow plants that would be challenging to grow in-ground."
To find out more about Stringer Nursery and Garden Center, stop by 7203 E. 41st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, call 918-628-0296, or visit http://stringernursery.com/.

"Here's my start for the fall: seven corn (one never germinated), one Tabasco pepper, and eight bush green beans.
"The divisions on the orange-and-white stick are 1 dm = 10 cm. Sort of strange to have them in front of the house, but what little of the back yard is not filled with swimming pool is covered by a live oak tree!"
