GrowBox Nutrient Patch FAQs

Is the EarthBox Replant Kit compatible with the GrowBox system?

Yes! The included premium fertilizer, natural dolomite lime, and weed/rain covers are fully compatible with the Garden Patch GrowBox system. Please note our cover replaces the nutrient patch. A woven patch/cover like the one GrowBox offers is not included.

To use our replanting kit with a GrowBox or any other container garden system, simply add the included fertilizer and dolomite lime when initially planting. Place the included weed/rain cover over top your GrowBox, cutting small holes for your seeds/seedlings. Unlike the cover from Garden Patch, our cover fully prevents nutrients from washing away and conserves water by preventing water evaporation.

Should I buy the Standard 7-7-7 or the Natural 8-3-5 fertilizer?

Unless you intend to grow leafy or cruciferous crops like herbs, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc., we highly recommend using our Standard 7-7-7 fertilizer. Our 7-7-7 plant food is great for all plants, and will produce much better results for fruiting and root crops (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, etc.) due to the higher phosphorous and potassium content.

Although only food produced using our Natural 8-3-5 fertilizer can be considered organic (outside of California), it's important to note our Standard 7-7-7 plant food contains only 1 ingredient that isn't certified organic. That ingredient is diammonium phosphate, which is used in wine and mead making. It isn't harmful, but can't be considered organic for environmental purposes. So if you desire to grow fully organic produce, then you should choose the Natural 8-3-5 option. Just keep in mind your fruiting and root crops won't grow as well or produce as much.

Note: Both options come with natural dolomite lime and weed/rain covers.

Do I really need to use the top cover?

Yes! The top cover is what protects the growing environment of the entire container garden. It helps conserve water by limiting evaporation, and it prevents heavy rains from washing away all the plants’ fertilizer and nutrients. The cover also protects the potting mix/soil from weeds and pests.

Place the cover on your GrowBox system during planting. Leave it on until your growing season is over and you’re ready to remove the plants and clean up the growing system.

Always use the top cover, even in very hot climates. If your local temperatures are typically over 85° F during the peak growing season, place the cover on the system with the white side facing up. This will reflect the sun so small plants don’t become stressed from the heat.

For cooler climates where early growing season temperatures may still be too cold for some plants, place the cover on the system with the black side facing up. This will attract the sun and warm the growing media to help small plants grow.

Are seeds or potting mix included with this GrowBox Replanting Kit?

No, seeds and potting mix are not included with our Replanting Kits. This kit includes:

  • 1 lb. premium fertilizer (choice of 7-7-7 or 8-3-5)
  • 1 lb. of natural dolomite lime
  • 2 black & white reversible covers

Can I buy potting mix from you?

Yes, we sell specially formulated container gardening potting mix as part of our EarthBox Planting Kit. That kit includes premium fertilizer, natural dolomite lime, weed/rain covers, and organic Sphagnum peat potting mix. In other words, it includes everything in this Replanting Kit plus 2 cubic feet of organic potting mix. Both kits are fully compatible with the Garden Patch GrowBox system.

You can also review our approved brands for other recommended growing media options that you may be able to find at a local garden center.

How often should I replace my potting mix?

We recommend reusing the same growing media over and over, up to 8-10 growing seasons.

The reason for this is: 1) it’s a lot easier to leave it in place, and 2) it’s better for your plants NOT changing it each year. The continual addition of dolomite each growing season allows for better concentration and readily available elements to be taken by the plant, resulting in a decreased rate of BER in tomatoes and peppers. In our company garden, we tested tomatoes using a new setup and a replant setup, and the tomatoes showed less incidence of BER in the replanted system vs. the new setup.

If your garden previously suffered from any plant diseases, such as blight, be sure to get confirmation of the disease from your local extension service by having a sample tested. Plant diseases generally cannot overwinter through extended periods of freezing temperatures. If you’re unsure what your winter temperatures will be, you can opt to discard the contents from your container garden, sanitize the container and all parts, and start fresh the following growing season.

If you feel the need to discard the contents of the system due to plant disease, do NOT compost or reuse them elsewhere in your yard. Place the contents in a double-bagged trash bin and tie the bags in a knot to seal the contents inside. To sanitize your container garden, mix 1 part of chlorine bleach with 10 parts of water and soak each affected part for 30 minutes. Rinse well and dry completely before replanting.

Is the Natural 8-3-5 fertilizer certified organic?

The EarthBox® Natural 8-3-5 Plant Food is derived from meat and bone meal, feather meal, sulfate of potash, and dolomite lime. When available, USDA-certified organic by-products may be used in the manufacturing of this fertilizer, but that is not a guarantee; nor are certified organic fertilizer components required to be used to produce organic-certifiable foods. The term “organic” can only be used to certify USDA food products, and the 8-3-5 fertilizer we offer for growing produce allows for the certification of organically-grown produce (outside of California).

Fertilizer in and of itself cannot be certified “organic” because it is not food, but can be used for organic food production, based on the components and materials of the fertilizer. Our 8-3-5 fertilizer previously was registered with OMRI (Organic Material Review Institute), which is an independent third-party organization that analyzes the materials and components in various agriculture products and the effect they have on the environment. Only those products that pass OMRI’s environmental standards may bear their certification label. Because this certification is extremely costly, and we have had no formula changes to the 8-3-5 fertilizer, we have declined to continue registering this product with OMRI since 2013. The food that is produced with our 8-3-5 fertilizer would still be considered organic (outside of California). Organic controls (herbicides, pesticides, disease controls, etc.) follow these same guidelines.

Outside & Indoors
You can grow either outside or indoors with any EarthBox or GrowBox thanks to their small footprint. If growing indoors, be sure to use appropriate grow lights for your plant.

Food Safe
Both are made from food safe, BPA-free polypropylene, and do not leach harmful chemicals.

Self-Watering
Both are sub-irrigated planters (SIP) meaning plants draw water from the bottom reservoir via natual capillary action. Your plants are kept optimally watered without risk of overwatering.

Eco-Friendly
The sub-irrigated water reservoir promotes less frequent watering & prevents wasting water. The EarthBox mulch cover better prevents water & fertilizer from evaporating.

UV-Protected
Both GrowBox and EarthBox containers are infused with UV blockers to help prevent color fading and becoming brittle from sun exposure.

Reusable
Both are reusable season after season, typically only requiring a Replant Kit. For best results, replace fertilizer & dolomite every season, but reuse your potting mix.

Recyclable
Both GrowBox and EarthBox are made from recyclable plastic.
