A household name for more than 130 years, Beefsteak tomatoes are well-known for their large, 2 lb. fruit, and distinct heirloom flavor. They are a great choice if you want a tomato that provides a multitude of ways to use your harvest. This all-purpose variety is a perfect slicing tomato for sandwiches, burgers, and Caprese salads; but also makes for an excellent canning tomato if you wish to preserve them diced or pureed for salsa and sauce, or simply enjoy eating them fresh—straight from the garden!

Should I sow tomato seeds directly in the EarthBox® gardening system?

Seeds in the Nightshade family should not be sown directly in the EarthBox® gardening system—this includes eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes.

Instead, germinate your tomato seeds in a seed-starting tray or some plastic cups filled with peat-based growing medium approximately 8-10 weeks before transplanting them into the EarthBox® growing system. You should plan to germinate 3-4 seeds separately, rather than placing them all in one cup.

Once seeds germinate, choose the two strongest plants to place in the EarthBox® system according to the setup instructions and Plant Placement Chart. Do not put more than two tomato plants in your EarthBox® container garden

The EarthBox® gardening system is a low-maintenance, fail-proof design determined to fill the needs of the home gardener of any skill level. Since not all home gardeners live in the same area, there are many challenges to finding the perfect container gardening solution for everyone, but the EarthBox® system does just that. Combining science—and a ton of testing—with great design and American manufacturing, the EarthBox® container gardening system was designed by applying a variety of tried-and-true commercial growing concepts to a small footprint to produce better results than traditional in-ground gardens. The following diagram explains in detail how the EarthBox® growing system components all operate together:
